Things to Do in the Staunton Area

Staunton is the home of the American Shakespeare Center with plays/shows 4 or 5 nights week and a matinee on Sundays – all year long.  Generally, there are three plays on offer, each on a different night. Discounted tickets are available with 2 days’ notice from ASC, or 3 days if you call on Saturday or Sunday ($25 each).  There are no plays on Mondays and Tuesdays.

If you like antiquing this area abounds with good places to hunt for something special right in town – about 10-12 shops and 2 malls. In the larger area, there is a wonderful Route 11 you might find appealing to find antique shops, many are within about a 25-mile range from Staunton.

If you like hiking then the Blue Ridge Parkway is only about a 20-minute drive from the cottage. Going south is “free” and going north you enter the Shenandoah National Park for a fee. There are many trails starting from the Parkway. Great views too. It is a SLOW drive – about 35 miles per hour – so if you decide to drive to Staunton on some of the parkway, be aware that it takes a long time.

Oct10fishpondsites to see locally:  The Frontier Culture Museum, the Woodrow Wilson Birthplace; Polyface farm, Stonewall Jackson House in Lexington; the George Marshall Museum at VMIAshlawn – James Monroe’s home; and, of course, near Charlottesville there is Monticello – about 45 minutes from the cottage.

A little further afield there are some battlefields (Newmarket to name one); Grand Caverns  – 16 miles north and east off 1-81- voted #2 in all of America a few years ago; and Green Valley Books, which has fabulous sales every month or two.

Horse riding is another option with a local stable offering rides most days. Monterey is not far, and also Warm Springs for a beautiful trip through the mountains.
